A King County Superior Court judge on Thursday sentenced Naveed Haq to life in prison without release for a shooting rampage at the Seattle Jewish Federation office that wounded five and killed Pam Waechter, who spent years at Bellevue's Temple B'nai Torah. The man who opened fire inside the downtown Jewish Federation was found guilty Monday morning in his second trial. After deliberating for three days following the end of the trial last week, a King County jury found Naveed Haq guilty of murder, five counts of attempted murder, unlawful...more imprisonmentand malicious harassment. Haq, 34, had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the July 2006 shootings, in which Pam Waechter, the federation's 58-year-old campaign director, was killed. On Thursday a King County judge upheld an earlier ruling, allowing jailhouse phone calls to made by Naveed Haq to his parents as evidence. The state Supreme Court recently ruled that inmates' phone calls aren't private likely.

Isaac Zamora's mother said she has tried to have her son involuntarily committed in the past to no avail. The laws protecting individuals' rights make it extremely difficult to lockup the mentally ill, and this protection has had deadly consequences in the past.
